Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Hanley', 'AC Linora', 'AC McDuff' and 'Flanders'
Summary: 'Macbeth' is an oilseed flax variety which has no ciliation of the false septa, whereas ciliation is present in 'Hanley' and in 'AC Linora' and 'Flanders' it is mixed. 'Macbeth' differs from 'Hanley', 'AC Linora', 'AC McDuff' and 'Flanders' in the colour of the base of the style. In 'Macbeth' it is white while in all four reference varieties the base is blue.
Description:
'Macbeth' is an oilseed flax variety. The hypocotyls of the seedlings have very weak or no anthocyanin colouration. The flowers are medium sized and flattened disk shape, with no longitudinal folding of the petals. Sepal dotting is absent to weak. The flowers of 'Macbeth' are medium blue and the filament is white at the top and at the base. The anther is blue, with clear pollen. The style is white at the top and white at the base, with a light violet to white stigma.
'Macbeth' matures mid-season and produces a medium sized capsule which is semi-dehiscent. Ciliation of the false septa is absent. The seeds are medium brown and medium in size. 'Macbeth' is resistant to flax wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lini). The variety is immune to North American flax rust races.
'Macbeth' has good resistance to shattering, capsule loss and lodging. It has a moderate capability to produce basal branching.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Macbeth', which was tested under the experimental number FP1096, and was developed at the Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba, from the cross 'M2701' / 'AC Linora', made in 1990. In the development of FP1096, the F2 and subsequent generations were advanced using the pedigree method with selection pressure for oil content, oil quality, lodging resistance and rust resistance. Single plant selection was made in the F3 and F5 generations. An F7 line, designated M4080, was selected and evaluated in preliminary yield trials in 1995 and for Fusarium wilt in the Fusarium wilt nurseries in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The line was evaluated as FP1096 in the 1997 Flax Joint Project test at 10 locations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan and in the Flax Cooperative test from 1998 to 2000.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Macbeth' were conducted at the Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba, during 2001 and 2002. The trials consisted of 2 replicates of 4-row plots. The plots were 5.5 metres long and the rows were spaced at 30cm. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 50 measurements per year. Seed characteristics and quality characteristics were determined on a seed sample from each of the 2 replicates.
