Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: '1084' and '2047'

Summary: '2090' has medium blue petal colour while the reference varieties have light blue petals. '2090' has no ciliation of the false septa whereas '2047' has ciliation present. '2090' has medium yellow seed colour while '1084' has light yellow seed colour and '2047' has dark yellow seed colour. '2090' has a higher seed weight than '1084'. '2090' has a higher oil and protein content than '1084' and a lower protein content than '2047'. '2090' has less palmitic fatty acid than the reference varieties and more stearic and oleic fatty acid levels than '2047'. '2090' has less linoleic and linolenic fatty acid levels than '2047' and has more linoleic fatty acid than '1084'. '2090' has less linolenic fatty acid than '1084'.

Description:

'2090' is an oilseed flax variety. The flowers are medium in size and a flattened disk shape. There is no longitudinal folding of the petals and sepal dotting on the flowers is absent to very weak. The petal colour is medium blue and the filament is blue at the top and white at the base. The colour of the anthers is blue and the pollen is white. The style is violet at the top and blue at the base. The stigma colour is dark violet.

The capsules mature early to mid-season and are medium in size. The capsule is indehiscent and there is no ciliation of the false septa. Seeds of '2090' are medium yellow in colour and medium in size. The variety is moderately resistant to flax wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lini). It has good resistance to shattering and capsule loss, and good lodging resistance. '2090' produces a medium number of basal branches.

Origin & Breeding History: '2090' resulted from the cross 92-7335/92-7337 made in Morden, Manitoba in 1993. F2 and subsequent generations were advanced using the pedigreed breeding method. Selection pressure was applied for seed colour, oil content, fatty acid profile, lodging resistance, disease resistance and agronomics. Single plant selection was made in the F3 and F5 generation. This line was evaluated in replicated field trials in 1998 and in 1999 as 93-6019-F10-108-1. The line was evaluated as SP 2090 in the 2000 - 2002 Low Linolenic Flax (Solin) Co-operative Test. 195 kg of breeder lines of 2090 were bulked from 88 pure lines, grown at Rosebank, Manitoba in 2002.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for '2090' were conducted at Rosebank, Manitoba in 2002 and 2003. The trials consisted of 4 replicates of 6-row plots. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 40 measurements per year.
