Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Sorrel' and 'CDC Bethune'

Summary: At the time of flowering, the plants including branches of 'CDC Esme' are shorter than the plants of 'CDC Sorrel'. Immediately after flower opening, the colour of the distal end of the filament of ‘CDC Esme' is white whereas that of ‘CDC Bethune' is blue. The boll of ‘CDC Esme' is shorter than that of both reference varieties.

Description:

HYPOCOTYL: medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration

FLOWER: first flower present on 10 percent of plants at 49 days from planting, dark violet crown at bud stage, absent or very weak sepal dotting at bud stage, when fully open corolla is medium sized and flattened disc shaped, dark violet when fully developed, no longitudinal folding of the petals, overlapping petals
STAMEN: filament white at distal and basal ends, dark blue anthers, blue pollen
STYLE: white at distal end, pale blue at basal end

BOLL: medium sized at maturity, semi-dehiscent, ciliation of false septa present, matures mid-season
SEED: medium brown, medium size

AGRONOMY: good resistance to shattering, capsule loss and lodging; high tendency of producing basal branching
USE: oilseed type

Origin & Breeding History: ‘CDC Esme' (experimental designations ‘FP2591' and ‘HYF16527') originated from a controlled cross conducted between F6 breeding lines ‘HYF12139' and ‘HYF12546' at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2013. The variety was advanced from the F1 to the F10 generation in Western Canada and contra season nurseries in New Zeland. Selection criteria was based on yield, days to maturity, percent seed oil content and iodine value. Breeder seed was established at the F11 generation in 2022.

Tests & Trials: Comparative trials were conducted in 2023 and 2024 at the Kernen Crop Research Farm in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Trials consisted of 3 replications of each variety in a randomized complete block design. There were 6 rows (3.66 metres long and 16 cm apart) per replicate. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
