Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Sugar and Spice'

Summary: The height of the foliage of 'Jade Peacock' is taller than the foliage of 'Sugar and Spice'. The total area of colour one on the upper side of the young and mature leaf blade is on a small amount of area for 'Jade Peacock' and is on a medium amount of area for 'Sugar and Spice'. The total area of colour two on the upper side of the young and mature leaf blade is on a large amount of area for 'Jade Peacock' and is on a medium amount of area for 'Sugar and Spice'. The leaf blade length to width ratio is slightly elongated for 'Jade Peacock' whereas it is moderately elongated for 'Sugar and Spice'. The flowering stem of 'Jade Peacock is longer than the flowering stem of 'Sugar and Spice'. The flowers within the flowering part of the flowering stem are less dense for 'Jade Peacock' than the florets of 'Sugar and Spice'.

PETIOLE: medium density of pubescence, brown purple (RHS 186A)
YOUNG LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): colour one is dark purple red (RHS 59A/B) distributed along veins over a small area as a solid or nearly solid and dotted pattern, colour two is light green (RHS 144B) distributed over a large area along marginal zone as a solid or nearly sold pattern
LEAF BLADE: length to width ratio is slightly elongated, acute apex, deep sinus between lobes, medium number of margin indentations, medium depth of margin indentation, weak undulation of margin, weak rugosity, absent or very weak glossiness, sparse pubescence on upper and lower side, colour one is dark purple red (RHS 59A/B) distributed along veins as a solid or nearly solid and dotted pattern, colour two is light green (RHS 144A) distributed over a large area along marginal zone as a solid or nearly sold pattern, light green (RHS 144C) on lower side

FLOWERING STEM: upright attitude, green brown (RHS 153C) peduncle, length to width ratio of flowering part is strongly elongated, medium flower density
FLOWER BUD: brown purple and blue pink (RHS 186B/C/D)
FLOWER: outwards attitude, short, narrow, white (RHS 155D)

Origin & Breeding History: 'Jade Peacock' originated from a cross pollination that occurred on March 8, 2011 between the variety 'Pink Brushes', as the female parent, and the variety 'Cascade Creeper', as the male parent. The resulting seeds were harvested on April 6, 2011. 'Jade Peacock' was selected during the late summer of 2011 based on improved foliage colour, flower performance and landscape usefulness. All breeding work was conducted at Walters Gardens Inc., Zeeland, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Jade Peacock' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2015 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. There were 13 plants of the candidate variety and 15 plants of the reference variety. Each plant was grown in a 16 cm diameter pot, one plant per pot with 45 cm spacing between the pots. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of 'Jade Peacock' and 'Sugar and Spice'. All colour determinations were made using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
