Origin & Breeding History: ‘UMNFOR01' originated from an open pollinated cross between the female parent variety ‘Northern Sun' and an unknown male parent, conducted in Donald, Oregon, USA in the spring of 1998. The new variety ‘UMNFOR01' was selected from the resulting seedlings in the spring of 2004 based on plant growth habit, plant height, tolerance to cold, foliage characteristics and flower characteristics. Asexual reproduction by softwood cuttings was initiated in the summer of 2004.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘UMNFOR01' was conducted outdoors during the spring and summer of 2024 and 2025 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from 10 cm liners, transplanted into 11.3 litre containers in July of 2023. Plants were overwintered in a non-heated double polyhouse for 2023 and 2024. They were moved outdoors in the early spring of 2024 to a drip irrigated field area and arranged in rows with approximately 1 meter spacing between plants. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on August 8, 2024, with the exception of the flowering characteristics, which were observed in April of 2025. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
