Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'DG09-4' (Illumination Flame)

Summary: The leaf of 'Takfoplgo' is narrower than that of 'DG09-4'. The distance between the flowers on the inflorescence of 'Takfoplgo' is of medium length while that of 'DG09-4' is short. The corolla of 'Takfoplgo' is smaller than the corolla of 'DG09-4'. The inner side of the upper corolla lobe of 'Takfoplgo' is purple while that of 'DG09-4' is light yellow with orange tones and dark purple red secondary colour along the margin. The inner side of the lower corolla lobe of 'Takfoplgo' is purple with light yellow orange while the inner side of the lower corolla lobe of 'DG09-4' is orange changing to white toward the base with a band of purple secondary colour along the margin and medium brown veins. The outer side of the lower corolla lobe of 'Takfoplgo' is purple whereas the outer side of the lower corolla lobe of 'DG09-4' is brown purple to blue pink with light yellow orange tones toward the base and dark purple red along the margin edge. The inner side of the corolla tube of 'Takfoplgo' is purple with dark purple red blotches and speckles whereas that of 'DG09-4' is light yellow with medium brown speckles. The outer side of the corolla tube of 'Takfoplgo' is purple whereas that of 'DG09-4' is orange with brown purple to blue pink at the transition to the corolla lobes.

LEAF BLADE: narrow elliptic shape, acute to acuminate apex, attenuate base, serrate incisions of margin, medium to dark green on upper side, very dense pubescence on upper side, no lobing, medium degree of blistering

FLOWER BUD: oblong shape, brown purple (more purple than RHS 186A), light green (RHS 145C-D) at base
INFLORESCENCE: raceme type, many flowers per raceme, medium length rachis internode

CALYX: outer dorsal side is medium green, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration at distal end, medium density pubescence on outer dorsal side
COROLLA: bilabiate form, strong conspicuousness of spots on inner side, dense and long pubescence on outer side
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): upper lobe is purple (closest to RHS 70A), lower lobe is purple (closest to RHS 70A) with light yellow orange (RHS 23C-D)
COROLLA LOBE (OUTER SIDE): upper lobe is purple (RHS 70A), lower lobe is purple (RHS 70A-B)
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): purple (darker than RHS 70A) with dark purple red (RHS 59A) blotches and speckles
COROLLA TUBE (OUTER SIDE): purple (darker than RHS 70A)
ANTHER: white to yellow after dehiscence

Origin & Breeding History: 'Takfoplgo' originated from a cross conducted by the breeder during a controlled breeding program in Honselersdijk, the Netherlands in June 2008. The cross involved the proprietary Digitalis purpurea breeding selection '8044-1' as the female parent and the proprietary Digitalis canariensis breeding selection '7738' as the male parent. 'Takfoplgo' was initially selected in June 2009 for its unique flower colouration.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Takfoplgo' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2015 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings transplanted into 20 cm standard pots on June 18, 2015. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on July 29, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
