Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'DG09-4' (Illumination Flame)

Summary: The corolla of 'Takforoiv' is narrower than the corolla of 'DG09-4'. The inner side of the upper corolla lobe of 'Takforoiv' is light yellow brown with purple to light blue pink secondary colour along the margin with darkest colour at the margin edge while the inner side of the upper corolla lobe of 'DG09-4' is light yellow with orange tones and dark purple red secondary colour along the margin. The inner side of the lower corolla lobe of 'Takforoiv' is white with yellow green tones and purple secondary colour along the margin with brown purple spots while that of 'DG09-4' is orange changing to white toward the base with a band of purple secondary colour along the margin and medium brown veins. The outer side of the upper corolla lobe of 'Takforoiv' is purple to blue pink whereas the outer side of the upper corolla lobe of 'DG09-4' is brown purple to blue pink with dark purple red along the margin edge. The outer side of the lower corolla lobe of 'Takforoiv' is blue pink whereas the outer side of the lower corolla lobe of 'DG09-4' is brown purple to blue pink with light yellow orange tones toward the base and dark purple red along the margin edge. The inner side of the corolla tube of 'Takforoiv' is white with blue pink tones and purple spots whereas that of 'DG09-4' is light yellow with medium brown speckles. The outer side of the corolla tube of 'Takforoiv' is purple whereas that of 'DG09-4' is orange with brown purple to blue pink at the transition to the corolla lobes. The conspicuousness of the markings on the inner side of the corolla is strong for 'Takforoiv' whereas it is weak to medium for 'DG09-4'. The outer side of the corolla of 'Takforoiv' has weak to medium density pubescence whereas the corolla of 'DG09-4' has strong pubescence.

INFLORESCENCE: raceme type, many flowers per raceme, short to medium length rachis internode
CALYX: outer dorsal side is medium green, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium density pubescence on outer dorsal side

Origin & Breeding History: 'Takforoiv' originated from a cross conducted by the breeder during a controlled breeding program in Honselersdijk, the Netherlands in June 2008. The cross involved the proprietary Digitalis purpurea breeding selection '17097' as the female parent and the proprietary Digitalis canariensis breeding selection '7738' as the male parent. From the resulting progeny, 'Takforoiv' was initially selected in June 2009 for its unique flower colouration.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Takforoiv' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2015 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings transplanted into 4.4 liter containers on June 18, 2014. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on August 13, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
