Varieties used for comparison: 'Dollar Princess' and 'Tom Thumb'
Summary: 'Kielimin' has a narrow upright growth habit while 'Dollar Princess' and 'Tom Thumb' have a upright bushy growth habit. The stem anthocyanin colouration of 'Kielimin' is weaker than the reference varieties. 'Kielimin' has a slightly smaller leaf than 'Dollar Princess'. The leaf margin incisions of 'Kielimin' are deeper than the reference varieties. 'Kielimin' has a single flower type while 'Dollar Princess' has a double flower type. The flower of 'Kielimin' is wider than 'Tom Thumb' but narrower than 'Dollar Princess'. 'Kielimin' has a narrower sepal than 'Dollar Princess'. The sepal of 'Kielimin' has an erect attitude while it is semi-erect to horizontal for the reference varieties. 'Kielimin' has a strongly reflexing sepal apex while it is straight to reflexing in the reference varieties. The sepal colour of 'Kielimin' is a dark pink-red while the sepal is purple-red in the reference varieties. 'Kielimin' has fewer flower petals than 'Dollar Princess'. The flower petals of 'Kielimin' are larger and a lighter purple colour than the reference varieties.
Description:
'Kielimin' is a fuchsia variety with a narrow upright growth habit. The stems have absent to very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blades are medium green in colour on the upper side with absent to very weak blistering and shallow incisions of the margin.
'Kielimin' has a single flower type. The sepals are erect with a strongly reflexing apex. The sepals are dark pink-red in colour on the outer and inner side. The colour of the petals is violet on the upper and lower sides. Anthocyanin colouration on the ovary is absent. The hypanthium is globose in form and dark pink-red in colour. The colour of the style is pink. The stamen filaments are pink in colour.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Kielimin' was developed from a Fuchsia x hybrida breeding program conducted in the 1990's at Kieft Bloemzaden, b. V., Venhuizen, The Netherlands. The objective of the program was to create new Fuchsia varieties suitable for bedding purposes. Selection criteria included upright habit, large flowers, early blooming, heat tolerance and flower colour. 'Kielimin' was a selection made from a seedling population of Fuchsia x hybrida that was produced as a result of crossing two inbred parental lines, 2393 x 2055.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kielimin' were conducted in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2005. Fifteen plants of each variety were individually grown in 10cm plastic pots in a polyhouse. Unless indicated otherwise, measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
