Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Dollar Princess' and 'Tom Thumb'

Summary: 'Kiewilidiv' has a narrower more upright plant growth habit than the reference varieties. The stem, petiole and pedicel anthocyanin colouration in 'Kiewilidiv' is weaker than the reference varieties. 'Kiewilidiv' has a slightly longer leaf than 'Tom Thumb'. The flower width of 'Kiewilidiv' is wider than in 'Tom Thumb'. 'Kiewilidiv' has a single flower type while it is double type in 'Dollar Princess'. The style of 'Kiewilidiv' is white while it is pink in the reference varieties. 'Kiewilidiv' has a white to pink filament colour while it is pink to violet in the reference varieties. The hypanthium of 'Kiewilidiv' is globose in form while it is a cylindrical form in 'Tom Thumb'. 'Kiewilidiv' has an hypanthium and sepal that is greenish white in colour while the reference varieties have a purple-red coloured hypanthium and sepal. The sepal of 'Kiewilidiv' is larger than in 'Tom Thumb'. 'Kiewilidiv' has a larger flower petal than the reference varieties. 'Kiewilidiv' has a lighter violet petal colour than the reference varieties.

Description:

'Kiewilidiv' is a fuchsia variety with a narrow upright growth habit. The stems have absent to very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blades are medium green in colour on the upper side with absent to very weak blistering and shallow incisions of the margin.

'Kiewilidiv' has a single flower type. The sepals are semi-erect in attitude with a straight to reflexing apex. The sepals are white in colour on the outer and inner side. The colour of the petals is violet on the upper and lower sides. Anthocyanin colouration on the ovary is absent. The hypanthium is globose in form and white in colour. The colour of the style is white. The stamen filaments are white to pink in colour.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Kiewilidiv' was developed from a Fuchsia x hybrida breeding program conducted in the 1990's at Kieft Bloemzaden, b. V., Venhuizen, The Netherlands. The objective of the program was to create new Fuchsia varieties suitable for bedding purposes. Selection criteria included upright habit, large flowers, early blooming, heat tolerance and flower colour. 'Kiewilidiv' was a selection made from a seedling population of Fuchsia x hybrida that was produced as a result of crossing two inbred parental lines 4122-4 x 4169-2.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kiewilidiv' were conducted in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2005. Fifteen plants of each variety were individually grown in 10cm plastic pots in a polyhouse. Unless indicated otherwise, measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
