Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Baltorflam' (Torch Flame)
Summary: 'Baltoredem' is a Gaillardia variety which differs from 'Baltorflam' in the ray floret colours and the extent of secondary colour on the inner side of the ray florets. The ray florets of 'Baltoredem' have bicoloured lobes, with the distal half yellow and the basal half red. The corolla lobes of the ray florets of 'Baltorflam' are mostly yellow, with red colouration only at the base.
Description:
'Baltoredem' is a Gaillardia variety which has an upright bushy growth habit and moderate branching. The stems are medium in thickness, light green with no anthocyanin colouration and have sparse to medium pubescence. The leaves are simple and lanceolate to oblanceolate in shape. The leaf apex is acute and the base is obtuse. 'Baltoredem' has sessile, medium green, lobed leaves with dense pubescence on the upper and lower sides.
The peduncle of 'Baltoredem' has very weak to weak anthocyanin colouration. There is a high density of very short hairs on the peduncle, with longer hairs also sparsely present over the entire surface. The flower heads are erect. The ray florets of 'Baltoredem' are trumpet shaped with medium sized lobes. The margins of the lobes are entire. The inner side of each lobe is bicoloured with yellow on the distal half and red on the basal half, extending down in to the corolla tube. The lower side of the corolla lobes is yellow with brown purple on the outer side of the corolla tube.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Baltoredem' originated in a controlled breeding program during February 2000 at Arroyo Grande, California, as the result of the open pollination of the Gaillardia cultivar 'Baltorflam', characterized by its red/yellow coloured flowers and vigourous, upright habit. The initial selection was made in October 2000. Asexual propagation since that time has been through the use of vegetative cuttings.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Baltoredem' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring/summer of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on June 30, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
