Description:

'Springtime' is a vegetatively propagated perennial geranium variety with a mounded growth habit. The stem is a dark green colour with absent to very sparse pubescence. The simple type leaves are orbicular in shape and are arranged in a rosette fashion. The lobed leaf blade is light green in colour with an acute shaped apex and a cordate shaped base. The petiole is present. The upper side of the leaf blade is variegated with dark violet splotching along the veins and a light yellow-green zone at the base.

'Springtime' flowers once, early in the season for a short period of time. The inflorescence type is a panicle or cyme that bears florets in a terminal erect position. There is a peduncle present that has no anthocyanin. The petals of the floret are touching, few in number and rounded in shape with a retuse shaped apex. There is no pubescence on the upper side of the petals of the floret.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Springtime' was developed from a chance seedling. The parents are unknown. It was selected based on its improved floral and foliage characteristics by P. H. Oudolf, at De Hummelo, the Netherlands in 1999.

Tests & Trials: The trials were conducted in the summer of 2003 at Oxford Station, Ontario. There were ten plants of each grown in a field with plants spaced 0.4 metres apart within the row, and 1 metre between rows.
