Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: Geum rivale

Summary: 'Flames of Passion' has smaller plants than the species Geum rivale. The stems of 'Flames of Passion' have medium to strong anthocyanin colouration, whereas those of the species have weak anthocyanin. The main distinguishing characteristics of 'Flames of Passion' are the floret size and colour. The candidate variety has large, pink red florets, while the species has smaller, light pinkish white florets.

Description:

'Flames of Passion' is a Geum variety which has a mounded plant growth habit. The stems are dark green with moderate pubescence and medium to strong anthocyanin colouration. The leaves are trifoliate, with a long petiole. The terminal leaflet is rhomboidal in shape, with an acute apex and cuneate base. The leaf blade is medium to dark green on the upper side and the margin is serrate.

The inflorescences of 'Flames of Passion' are arranged in a terminal compound corymb with branched peduncles which have very strong anthocyanin colouration. The variety flowers early and has a short flowering period. The florets are dark pink red on the upper side and red pink on the lower side.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Flames of Passion' was selected by the breeder in the Netherlands in 1999. It was a discovered seedling and the parents are unknown. The new cultivar was selected on the basis of its improved floral characteristics.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Flames of Passion' were conducted in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2005. Ten plants of each variety were grown in a garden plot. The plants were spaced approximately 35cm within the row and 30 cm between the rows. All colour determinations were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
