Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Phoenix' and 'Chardonnay'

Summary: The young shoot tip of 'Fleurtai' has none or very sparse prostrate hairs while that of 'Chardonnay' has sparse prostrate hairs. On the lower side of the young leaf blade, the prostrate hairs between the main veins of 'Fleurtai' are absent or very sparse while those of 'Chardonnay' are sparse. The mature leaf of 'Fleurtai' is small to medium sized while the mature leaf of 'Phoenix' is large. The peduncle of the primary berry bunch of 'Fleurtai' is medium to long while that of 'Chardonnay' is short.

MATURE LEAF: small to medium sized, circular, weak to medium blistering of upper side, one lobe, slightly opened petiole sinus, mixture of both sides straight and convex shaped teeth, very low to low proportion of anthocyanin colouration of the main veins on upper side, absent or very sparse prostrate hairs between main veins on lower side, absent or very sparse erect hairs on main veins on lower side, petiole is of equal length to middle vein
MATURE LEAF TEETH: short to medium length, small to medium length to width ratio

Origin & Breeding History: The University of Udine and the Institute for Applied Genomics have developed 'Fleurtai' through controlled selection and crossing. 'Fleurtai' originated in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region of North-East Italy by crossing the 'Tocai Friulano' variety, as the seed parent, with '20/3', an unreleased selection of the applicants collection as the pollen parent, in June 2002. The controlled cross was conducted using cluster isolation and flower emasculation in the seed parent and isolation of cluster in the pollen donor prior to flowering. The first asexual multiplication occurred in 2005 and the date in which 'Fleurtai' was ultimately obtained was in 2010. The seedling from which the variety originated was selected at the experimental farm Servadei, Udine, Italy. The genetic identity of the seedling was verified by DNA microsatellite markers. Selection criteria included medium vigour, resistance to downy mildew and tolerance to powdery mildew. The variety was evaluated in plots of 25 or 100 individuals for three consecutive years of production, from 2011 to 2013, in two ecologically different sites, Udine and Fossalon Grado, with rootstocks 1103 Paulsen, Kober 5BB.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Fleurtai' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2015/0363, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt under reference number RBE 1035 in Murbach, Germany, from 2017 to 2018.
