Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Hecker' and 'Evita'

Summary: The teeth of the mature leaf of 'Soreli' have a mixture of both sides straight and both sides convex while the teeth of the mature leaf of 'Evita' have both sides straight. The berry of 'Soreli' is small while that of 'Hecker' is large and that of 'Evita' is medium to large.

Description:

YOUNG SHOOT TIP: wide open tip, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of prostrate hairs, none or very sparse prostrate or erect hairs present
WOODY SHOOT: yellowish brown
SHOOT: dorsal side of internodes and nodes are green and red, ventral side of internodes and nodes are green, absent or very sparse erect hairs on internodes, semi-erect to horizontal attitude (before tying)
TENDRILS: very long

TIME OF BEGINNING OF BUD BURST: medium to late
YOUNG LEAF: green with anthocyanin spots on upper side, absent or very sparse prostrate hairs between main veins on lower side, absent or very sparse erect hairs on main veins on lower side
MATURE LEAF: medium sized, circular, weak blistering of upper side, five lobes, medium depth of upper lateral sinuses, lobes of upper lateral sinuses slightly overlapped, half opened petiole sinus, low proportion of anthocyanin colouration of the main veins on upper side, absent or very sparse prostrate hairs between main veins on lower side, very sparse to sparse erect hairs on main veins on lower side, petiole is moderately longer than middle vein
MATURE LEAF TEETH: medium to long, medium length to width ratio, mixture of both sides straight and convex

Origin & Breeding History: The University of Udine and the Institute for Applied Genomics have developed 'Soreli' through controlled selection and crossing. 'Soreli' originated in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region of North-East Italy by crossing the 'Tocai Friulano' variety, as the seed parent, with '20/3', an unreleased selection of the applicants collection as the pollen parent, in June 2002. The controlled cross was conducted using cluster isolation and flower emasculation in the seed parent and isolation of cluster in the pollen donor prior to flowering. The first asexual multiplication occurred in 2005 and the date in which 'Soreli' was ultimately obtained was in 2010. The seedling from which the variety originated was selected at the experimental farm Servadei, Udine, Italy. The genetic identity of the seedling was verified by DNA microsatellite markers. Selection criteria included medium vigour, resistance to downy mildew and tolerance to powdery mildew. The variety was evaluated in plots of 25 or 100 individuals for three consecutive years of production, from 2011 to 2013, in two ecologically different sites, Udine and Fossalon Grado, with rootstocks 1103 Paulsen, Kober 5BB.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Soreli' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2015/0361, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt under reference number RBE 1033 in Murbach, Germany, from 2017 to 2018.
