Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Monukka'

Summary: The berry of 'Valley Pearl' is globose shaped whereas the berry of 'Monukka' is obtuse ovoid shaped. The berry of 'Valley Pearl' has yellow green skin (without bloom) whereas the berry of 'Monukka' is blue black (without bloom).

Description:

YOUNG SHOOT TIP: early bud burst, fully opened, medium amount of prostrate hairs, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of prostrate hairs, absent or very weak erect hairs
SHOOT: green and red dorsal side of internodes and nodes, green ventral side of internodes and nodes, absent or very sparse erect hairs on internodes, semi-erect attitude (before tying)
WOODY SHOOTS: yellowish brown

TENDRILS: long

PETIOLE: moderately shorter than length of middle vein of mature leaf blade
YOUNG LEAF BLADE: upper side green, medium amount of prostrate hairs between main veins on lower side, absent or very sparse erect hairs on main veins on lower side
MATURE LEAF BLADE: five lobes, large, pentagonal shaped, absent or very weak blistering on upper side, slightly open lobes of petiole sinus, absent or very low proportion of main veins on upper side with anthocyanin colouration
MATURE LEAF BLADE (LOWER SIDE): sparse prostrate hairs between main veins, absent or very sparse erect hairs on main veins
UPPER LATERAL SINUSES: shallow, slightly overlapped lobes
TEETH OF LEAF MARGIN: medium length, medium length to width ratio, mixture of both sides straight and both sides convex

FLOWER: fully developed stamens and gynoecium

BERRY BUNCH: medium sized, lax density, very short peduncle of primary bunch
BERRY: begins ripening early, medium sized, globose shaped, moderately easy to detach from pedicel, no particular flavour, rudimentary formation of seed
BERRY SKIN: yellow green (without bloom), medium thickness
BERRY FLESH: very firm, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration

Origin & Breeding History: 'Valley Pearl' originated from a controlled cross conducted between the female parent variety 'A60-42' and the male parent variety 'C77-79' made in Fresno, California in 1996. 'Valley Pearl' was selected in 1999 for its ripening maturity, berry size, seedless berries, and fruit quality.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Valley Pearl' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2016/0435, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted at the Research Centre for Viticulture and Enology in Susegana, Italy from 2019 to 2022.
