Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Sheegene 26' and 'Isabella'

Summary: The lower side of the young leaf of 'Navsel 4' has absent or very sparse prostrate hairs between the main veins whereas that of 'Sheegene 26' has dense prostrate hairs between the main veins. The mature leaf of 'Navsel 4' is wedge shaped whereas the mature leaf of 'Sheegene 26' is circular shaped. The berry of 'Navsel 4' has rose coloured skin without bloom whereas the berry of 'Isabella' has blue black coloured skin without bloom.

Description:

YOUNG SHOOT TIP: fully open, sparse prostrate hairs, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of prostrate hairs, absent or very sparse erect hairs
SHOOT: dorsal side of internodes and nodes are green and red, ventral side of internodes and nodes are green, absent or very sparse erect hairs on internodes, predominantly semi-drooping attitude (before tying)
WOODY SHOOTS: orange brown, time of bud burst is predominantly mid-season
TENDRILS: long

YOUNG LEAF: light copper red upper side, absent or very sparse prostrate hairs between main veins on lower side of blade, absent or very sparse erect hairs between main veins on lower side of blade
MATURE LEAF: medium to large blade, wedge shaped, five lobes, medium depth upper lateral sinuses, slightly overlapping arrangement of lobes of upper lateral sinuses, half opened lobes of petiole sinus, petiole is moderately shorter than middle vein
MATURE LEAF (UPPER SIDE): low proportion of main veins with anthocyanin colouration, weak blistering
MATURE LEAF (LOWER SIDE): absent to very sparse prostrate hairs between main veins, sparse erect hairs between main veins
TEETH OF LEAF MARGIN: medium length, medium length to width ratio, mixture of both sides straight and both sides convex

FLOWER: fully developed stamens and fully developed gynoecium present

BERRY BUNCH: large, lax density, peduncle of primary bunch is short
BERRY: begins ripening mid-season, medium to large, obloid shape, difficult to detach from pedicel, foxy flavour, no formation of seeds
BERRY SKIN: rose coloured (without bloom), thin
BERRY FLESH: moderately firm, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration

Origin & Breeding History: 'Navsel 4' originated from a cross made in 1995 in Zicron Yaacov, Isreal, between the varieties 'Kioho' and 'Novomuscat'. The resulting progeny was multiplied in the spring of 1998 and the first fruit set was seen in 2001. 'Navsel 4' was selected for flavour and productivity. In 2010, 'Navsel 4' was grown and maintained in Murcia, Spain.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Navsel 4' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 20120147, purchased from the Oficina Española de Variedades Vegetales, Ministerio de Agricultura y Pesca, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente, in Madrid, Spain. The trial was conducted by the Centro de Ensayos de Evaluación de Variedades del Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Tecnologia Agraria y Alimentaria, in Murcia, Spain, from 2014 to 2019.
