Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'All Gold' and 'Aureola'

Summary: The plants of 'Hakbri1' are smaller than those of 'Aureola'. The foliage for 'Hakbri1' is dense whereas that of both reference varieties is a medium density. The leaf blade of 'Hakbri1' is shorter than that of 'Aureola'. The leaf blade of 'Hakbri1' is variegated whereas that of 'All Gold' is not variegated. The upper side of the upper leaf blades of 'Hakbri1' are medium yellow and light yellow with white secondary colour whereas those of 'All Gold' are medium to light green and those of 'Aureola' are medium yellow with medium to light green secondary colour. The lower side of the upper leaf blades of 'Hakbri1' are medium yellow and light yellow with white secondary colour whereas those of 'All Gold' are medium to light green and those of 'Aureola' are light green with light yellow secondary colour.

PLANT: vegetatively propagated, perennial type, bushy and pendulous growth habit, medium vigor, dense foliage
CULM: semi-erect attitude

LEAF: opposite arrangement, medium to dense pubescence at ligule
LEAF BLADE: linear shape, acuminate apex, entire margin, ranging from flat to weakly concave in cross section, variegated
UPPER LEAF BLADE: upper and lower sides mainly medium yellow (RHS 9B) and light yellow (RHS 10B-C) with white (RHS NN155A) secondary colour
LOWER LEAF BLADE: upper side mainly medium green to light green (RHS 144A-B) with light green (RHS 144C) secondary colour, lower side mainly medium brown green (RHS 138B) and light green (RHS 139D) with white (RHS 155A) secondary colour
LEAF SHEATH: very sparse pubescence

Origin & Breeding History: 'Hakbri1' originated as a naturally occurring mutation of the variety 'All Gold' discovered in Elma, Washington, USA in the spring of 2016. The new variety 'Hakbri1' was selected based on foliage colour. Asexual reproduction by tissue culture was initiated in Elma, Washington in July of 2017.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Hakbri1' was conducted as an outdoor container trial during the summer of 2022 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 10 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 7.6 litre containers in the spring of 2022. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on August 26, 2022. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
