Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Tonda di Giffoni'
Summary: The plant habit of 'McDonald' is erect while that of 'Tonda di Giffoni' is semi-erect. The one year old shoots of 'McDonald' have a strong density of lenticels while those of 'Tonda di Giffoni' have a weak density of lenticels. The time of leaf bud burst is mid-season for 'McDonald' whereas it is early for 'Tonda di Giffoni'. The male inflorescence of 'McDonald' is pink brown while that of 'Tonda di Giffoni' is green. The stigma of 'McDonald' is red whereas that of 'Tonda di Giffoni' is purple red. The time of flowering of the male inflorescence of 'McDonald' is late to very late whereas it is mid-season for that of 'Tonda di Giffoni'. The time of flowering of the female inflorescence of 'McDonald' is mid-season whereas it is early for 'Tonda di Giffoni'. The involucre of 'McDonald' is constricted while that of 'Tonda di Giffoni' is not constricted. The involucre of 'McDonald' has a medium degree of serration of indentations whereas that of 'Tonda di Giffoni' has a strong serration of indentations. The base of the involucre of 'McDonald' has a thin callus whereas that of 'Tonda di Giffoni' has a medium thickness callus. The involucre of 'McDonald' is weakly pubescent whereas that of 'Tonda di Giffoni' is strongly pubescent. The fruit of 'McDonald' is small to medium whereas that of 'Tonda di Giffoni is medium sized. The apex of the fruit of 'McDonald' is broad acute and of medium to strong prominence while that of 'Tonda di Giffoni' is obtuse and of slight to medium prominence. The top of the fruit of 'McDonald' has a medium density of pubescence while that of 'Tonda di Giffoni' has weak pubescence. The basal scar of the fruit of 'McDonald' is medium sized whereas that of 'Tonda di Giffoni' is small. The kernel of 'McDonald' does not have a lateral groove whereas that of 'Tonda di Giffoni' has a lateral groove. By weight, the percentage of kernel relative to the fruit is high for 'McDonald' whereas it is medium for that of 'Tonda di Giffoni'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'McDonald' (experimental designation OSU 880.027) originated from a controlled cross between 'Tonda Pacifica' and 'Santiam' conducted in Corvallis, Oregon, U.S.A. in 1997. Seeds from this cross were planted in 1998. 'McDonald' was finally selected in 2014 in Corvallis, Oregon, U.S.A. based on disease resistance, yield, fruit quality and harvesting factors. Asexual reproduction by root suckers was initiated in Corvallis, Oregon, U.S.A. in 2004.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'McDonald' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, reference number 2018/0210, purchased from The Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO), Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Spanish Plant Variety Office (OEVV), at the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology in Mas Bové, Spain from 2019 to 2023.
