Variety used for comparison: 'Marine'

Summary: The plant of 'WNHPAULAV' has a medium degree of branching while the plant of 'Marine' has a sparse degree of branching. The stem of 'WNHPAULAV' is light green while that of 'Marine' is medium green. The leaf blade of 'WNHPAULAV' is smaller than that of 'Marine'. The leaf blade of 'WNHPAULAV' has an obtuse apex and an obtuse to cordate base while the leaf blade of 'Marine' has an acuminate apex and a cuneate to obtuse base. The peduncle of 'WNHPAULAV' is shorter than that of 'Marine'. The corolla of 'WNHPAULAV' is larger in diameter and taller than that of 'Marine'. When newly opened, the inner side of the corolla of 'WNHPAULAV' is mainly medium blue violet while that of 'Marine' is mainly dark violet. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla of 'WNHPAULAV' is mainly medium blue violet while that of 'Marine' is mainly dark blue violet.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'WNHPAULAV' originated from an open pollination that occurred in Bonsall, California, U.S.A. in June to July of 2018. The cross occurred between the female proprietary seedling designated 16BR048 and an unknown male parent. From the resulting progeny, a single plant was selected on August 2, 2018 in Bonsall, California, U.S.A. based on plant vigour, plant growth habit, flower fragrance, inflorescence size and free flowering. 'WNHPAULAV' was first asexually propagated by cuttings on August 7, 2018 in Bonsall, California, U.S.A.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'WNHPAULAV' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2022 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 11 cm pots on April 6, 2022. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 8, 2022. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
