Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Fasamo'
Summary: 'Finola' differs from the reference variety, 'Fasamo' in plant maturity, plant height, type of flowering, number of internodes, number of leaflets and anthocyanin colouration of the male flowers. 'Finola' matures earlier and is shorter than 'Fasamo'. The plants of 'Finola' are dioecious whereas they are monoecious on 'Fasamo'. 'Finola' has fewer internodes and fewer leaflets than 'Fasamo'. The male flowers of 'Finola' have anthocyanin colouration whereas there is none in 'Fasamo'.
Description:
'Finola' is a very early maturing, dioecious oilseed hemp variety. The medium green cotyledons are ovate-oblong in shape with no anthocyanin colouration. The dioecious plants are predominately female with strong sex expression. Flowers typically appear between the third and fifth node. Branching of the plants is absent to very weak.
The dark green stem is medium in thickness with medium evidence of grooves. Internode length is medium. The medium green leaves are medium in size with five to seven leaflets. There is no anthocyanin colouration of the leaves or petioles. There is anthocyanin colouration of the male flowers. The seeds of 'Finola' are medium in size and ovate-oblong in shape. The testa is grey with strong net structure and medium marbling. The 'horseshoe' on the base of the grain is weak.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Finola' resulted from a mechanical blend of two similar early-blooming strains, VIR-313 and VIR-315, sourced from the Vavilov Research Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia. The blend was planted in a plot in central Finland in June, 1995. Plants were manually harvested and threshed in late September. The resulting hybrid was sexually reproduced in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Finola' were conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Melfort Research Station, Melfort, Saskatchewan in the summer of 2003. The trials consisted of 4 replicates per variety organized in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Each plot consisted of 7 rows with a row spacing of 18 cm. Results were supported by the official technical examination report purchased from the Plant Breeders' Rights Office in the Netherlands.
