The cross was monitored by Hans Hansen. 'Black Pearl' was initially selected for further evaluation in the spring of 2013. Selections were initially made based on flower colour and plant growth habit. Propagation was initially conducted by stem cuttings in 2014.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'Black Pearl' was conducted as an outdoor container trial during the summer of 2017 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. The trial consisted of 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. The plants were grown in 16 cm pots with 40 cm spacing between pots under a galvanized steel structure covered with black mesh shade fabric. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of 10 plants of each variety in late July of 2017. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
