Origin & Breeding History: 'Spearmint' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Hans Hansen, in Zeeland, Michigan, USA on April 11, 2013. The cross was made between the female parent, a proprietary unreleased hybrid known by the breeder code 12-287-01, and the male parent variety 'Coral Forest'. From the resulting progeny, seeds were collected from an individual plant at Walters Gardens, Inc. in Zeeland, Michigan and sown by the breeder in late 2013. In the fall of 2015, 'Spearmint' was selected for its foliage colour. 'Spearmint' was first asexually propagated using shoot tip tissue culture in the fall of 2016 in Zeeland, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Spearmint' was conducted outdoors during the summer of 2021 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. The plants were grown in 16 cm pots with 40 cm spacing between pots under a galvanized steel structure covered with black mesh shade fabric. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety in late June of 2021. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
