Summary: 'HERTN041' is a Heucherella variety which has slightly taller plants than 'Sunspot'. The leaves of 'HERTN041' have deep sinuses between the lobes, whereas the leaves of 'Sunspot' have shallower sinuses. The main colour of the upper and lower sides of the leaves of 'HERTN041' is a slightly darker yellow green colour than 'Sunspot'. 'HERTN041' has a longer petiole than 'Sunspot.
Description:
'HERTN041' is a Heucherella variety with a mounding plant growth habit. The leaves are simple, broad ovate in general shape and palmately lobed. There are deep sinuses between the lobes. The base of the leaf blade is closed to overlapping. The leaf margins are ciliate with shallow to medium, dentate incisions. There is moderate undulation of the leaf margins. Pubescence on the upper and lower side is sparse. The main colour on the upper side of the leaf is yellow green. There is secondary colour present, with red spots located on the upper side of the leaf blade, in the area of the mid-rib. The lower side of the leaf is light yellow green. 'HERTN041' has a long petiole with moderate pubescence.
Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'HERTN041' was developed by the breeder in Canby, Oregon, U.S.A. It originated from an intergeneric cross made in May 2000, between 'Amber Waves' as the female parent and an unknown proprietary Tiarella plant as the male parent. The new variety was selected based on leaf colour, leaf size and shape and flower colour.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'HERTN041' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2005, in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2005. Foliage height was recorded on July 15, 2005. All other observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on June 29, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
