Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Coconut Cream'
Summary: The leaf blade of 'HJ-116' has a strongly undulated margin with moderately deep incisions while 'Coconut Cream' has a weakly undulated leaf margin with absent to very shallow incisions. 'HJ-116' has an obtuse shaped leaf base while 'Coconut Cream' has a cordate base. Petals of 'HJ-116' are moderately overlapping and the petal margins are moderately undulated, whereas the petals of 'Coconut Cream' are strongly overlapping with strongly undulated margins. When newly opened, the upper side of the petal is white for 'HJ-116' with a yellow margin while it is pale yellow for 'Coconut Cream'. 'HJ-116' has a small red eye zone while 'Coconut Cream' has no eye zone. The lower side of the petal is white with a blush colour at the base for 'HJ-116' while it is light yellow for 'Coconut Cream'.
Description:
'HJ-116' has an upright branch attitude and medium branching density. The branches have very sparse pubescence and are greenish brown when new, turning to tan when older. The leaf blades are dark green on the upper side with no variegation. Pubescence on the leaf blades is very sparse. The outline of the leaf blade is cordate in shape, the base is obtuse, and the apex is acute with a blunt tip. The leaf blade margins have strong undulation with moderately deep crenate incisions and no lobing.
The flowers of 'HJ-116' are single and in the white colour group. The petals are spatulate in shape and moderately overlapping. The flowers are white in colour and have a small red eye zone. The petal colours fade as the flower ages. The petal margins have absent or very weak serration and moderate undulation. The stigma is yellow orange in colour and the style is yellow with red at the base.
Origin & Breeding History: 'HJ-116' originated from a hand pollinated cross between 'Byron Metts' (female parent) and 'HJ-136' (male parent), which took place at Seaforth, Ontario in November 2002. The parents were selected for flower colour and length of flowering time.
Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'HJ-116' were conducted at Seaforth, Ontario. Vegetative cuttings of the candidate variety were stuck on October 28, 2004, rooted for six weeks, and transplanted into 6 inch pots on December 9, 2004. Plants were pinched at 6 weeks from transplant. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on June 4, 2005. All colour measurements were determined using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
