Summary: The leaf blade of 'Perfect Storm' is shorter than that of 'Summer Storm'. The leaf blade of 'Perfect Storm' has very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas that of 'Summer Storm' has strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The flower of 'Perfect Storm' is larger than that of 'Summer Storm'. The flower of 'Perfect Storm' has a medium sized dark purple red eye zone whereas the flower of 'Summer Storm' has a large purple to purple red eye zone. The petals of 'Perfect Storm' have very strong overlapping whereas the petals of 'Summer Storm' have medium to strong overlapping. The petals of 'Perfect Storm' are larger than those of 'Summer Storm'. The plants of 'Perfect Storm' flower late to very late season while those of 'Summer Storm' flower mid to late season.
Description:
PLANT: upright to bushy growth habit, medium branching density
BRANCH: semi-upright attitude, red on upper third, strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
LEAF BLADE: upper side red, very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, palmate, truncate to cordate base, acute apex, strong degree of lobing, moderate undulation of margin, shallow dentate margin incisions
PETIOLE: very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER: single, white or near white main colour, medium sized eye zone, dark purple red (RHS 53A/B) eye zone, very strong overlapping of petals, late to very late season flowering
PETAL: Type 3 shape, two colours, upper side white (RHS N155B) with small flush of blue pink to light blue pink (RHS 63C/D), lower side white (RHS N155C), absent or very weak serrations on margin, medium to strong undulation of margin, no fading of colour
STAMINAL COLUMN: white main colour, colour at base identical to main colour
STIGMA PAD: white
Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Perfect Storm' originated from a cross conducted during the summer of 2011 in Zeeland, Michigan, USA. The cross was conducted between the female parent variety 'Crown Jewels' and the male parent variety 'Midnight Marvel'. The selection of 'Perfect Storm' was initially made in the spring of 2012 based on flower colour, growth habit, weather tolerance, leaf colour and leaf shape. Vegetative propagation of 'Perfect Storm' by stem cuttings was first conducted in 2013.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Perfect Storm' was grown outdoors at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario, during the summer of 2016. The trial consisted of 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. The plants were grown in 23 cm diameter round pots spaced approximately 75 cm apart. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
