Origin & Breeding History: 'G2X88544' originated from a cross conducted by the breeder, Michael S. Uchneat, of Garden Genetics LLC in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, USA between proprietary seedlings, the female parent variety '3349-4' and a mix of pollen collected from '3349-1', '3349-2' and '3349-3', in August 2009. From the resulting progeny, a single seedling was selected on January 9, 2011 in Bellefonte based on its autumn foliage colour, stem colour, leaf colour on new growth, basal branch density and plant vigour. 'G2X88544' was first propagated by vegetative cuttings on June 25, 2014 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'G2X88544' was conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the summer of 2016 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 12 shrubs each of the candidate and reference variety. All shrubs were grown from 10 cm rooted cuttings and transplanted into 11.4 litre containers on July 15, 2015. The trial was arranged outdoors in rows with 1 meter spacing between shrubs. Most observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 15, 2016. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
