Variety used for comparison: 'Cascade'
Summary: The leaf of 'Sea to Sky' is green and medium in size whereas the leaf of 'Cascade' is yellow green and small. The cones of 'Sea to Sky' have an early harvest maturity whereas the cones of 'Cascade' have a mid-season harvest maturity`. 'Sea to Sky' has large cones whereas 'Cascade' has medium sized cones. The bract on the cones of 'Sea to Sky' is large with a large width to length ratio whereas the bract on the cones of 'Cascade' is medium in size with a medium width to length ratio.
Description:
PLANT: non-dwarf type, cylindrical to club shaped, high volume head
MAIN SHOOT: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
SIDE SHOOT (MIDDLE THIRD): dense foliage, medium number of cones per node, medium number of total cones
SIDE SHOOT (UPPER THIRD): many cones
LEAF BLADE: medium size
LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): absent or very weak blistering, green, dark intensity of colour
FLOWERING: early
CONES: early harvest maturing, large, narrow ovate, closed bracts, medium intensity of green
BRACT: large, large width to length ratio, medium length of apex
Origin & Breeding History: 'Sea to Sky' was discovered by Richard Hartl in Pemberton, British Columbia in 2012. In 2013, rhizomes were harvested from the original plant and planted into trials in Pemberton, British Columbia. Selection of the initial hop variety was based on large cone size and Alpha Acid content.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'Sea to Sky' was conducted in Pemberton, British Columbia in 2014 and 2015. The trial consisted of a minimum of 10 plants per variety, spaced 90 cm apart in the row with a spacing of 3.5 metres between rows. Measured characteristics were based on 10 measurements per variety.
