Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'June'

Summary: 'Paradise Joyce' has a slightly larger plant with larger leaves than 'June'. The leaf of 'Paradise Joyce' is light yellow with a dark green margin, while 'June' has a cream coloured leaf with a dark green margin. 'Paradise Joyce' has a wider dark green margin area than 'June'. The petiole of 'Paradise Joyce' is slightly longer than 'June'.

Description:

'Paradise Joyce' is a vegetatively propagated perennial hosta with an arching growth habit. The simple type leaves with entire margin are arranged in a whorled to rosette fashion, are ovate in shape with acuminate apex and cordate base. There is no glaucosity or pubescence on the upper or lower side of the leaf blade. The variegated leaf is light yellow with a small to medium amount of dark green colouration along the margin. There is a petiole present.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Paradise Joyce' originated as a naturally occurring sport of the Hosta variety 'Halcyon' and was selected in 1993 in Ter Aar, The Netherlands. The selection criteria were attractive foliage colour characteristics.

Tests & Trials: Ten plants of each were grown in a field approximately 0.50 to 0.65 metres apart during the summer of 2003 at Oxford Station, Ontario. Unless otherwise indicated measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
