Origin & Breeding History: 'SMHMLDD' was bred and developed by the breeder, Timothy D. Wood, of Spring Meadow Nursery, Inc. in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA. It originated from an open pollinated cross that occurred in 2007 between the variety 'Lynn' as the female parent and the variety 'ES5' as the male parent. 'SMHMLDD' was selected in 2009 for its reblooming habit, very large inflorescence size, large sepal size, and sepal colour. Asexual reproduction of 'SMHMLDD' by softwood cuttings was first conducted in July 2009, in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'SMHMLDD' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 10 shrubs each of the candidate and reference varieties. All shrubs were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 13.5 litre containers on June 19, 2014. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 shrubs or parts of shrubs of the candidate variety on June 20, 2014, except for the flower characteristics which were taken on June 12, 2014. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 shrubs or parts of shrubs of the reference varieties on June 9, 2014. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
