Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'PIIHMI-I' (Endless Summer Twist-n-Shout) and 'Robert' (Let's Dance Moonlight)

Summary: The colour of the stem of 'PIIHM-II' is brown purple while the stem of 'PIIHM-I' is brown green with brown purple splotches and the stem of 'Robert' is green with spots of anthocyanin colouration of medium to strong intensity . The shape of the inflorescence is globular for 'PIIHM-II' while the inflorescence of 'PIIHM-I' is flattened. The fertile flowers within the inflorescence of 'PIIHM-II' are inconspicuous or slightly conspicuous while the fertile flowers of 'PIIHM-I' are very conspicuous. The calyx of the sterile flower of 'PIIHM-II' is smaller in diameter than the calyx of 'Robert'. When the sterile flower is newly open, the colour on the inner side of the sepal is purple red with light green at the base for 'PIIHM-II' while the inner side of the sepal is blue pink with yellow green to light yellow at the base for 'PIIHM-I' and darker blue pink with yellow green to light yellow at the base for 'Robert'. When the sterile flower is fully open, the colour on the inner side of the sepal is purple red for 'PIIHM-II' while the inner side of the sepal is light blue pink with darker blue pink tones for 'PIIHM-I' and blue pink with darker blue pink tones for 'Robert'. When the sterile flower is aged, the colour on the inner side of the sepal is blue pink to light blue pink for 'PIIHM-II' while the inner side of the sepal is blue pink for both reference varieties.

Description:

PLANT: non-climbing type, upright growth habit
STEM: no fasciation, brown purple (closest to RHS 183A but greyer), white lenticels

LEAF BLADE: no lobing, ovate and elliptic shape, medium length of tip, obtuse base, medium depth of incisions of margin, no variegation, medium green on upper side, medium intensity of glossiness on upper side, medium strength of blistering

INFLORESCENCE: globular shape, very inconspicuous or slightly conspicuous fertile flowers
STERILE FLOWER: single type, medium degree of overlapping of sepals
STERILE FLOWER SEPAL: no incisions of margin, inner side is purple red (RHS 54B-C) with light green (RHS 145B-D) at base when flower is newly open, inner side is purple red (closest to RHS N57C-D) when flower is fully open, inner side is blue pink to light blue pink (RHS 62A-B) when flower is aged, no secondary colour on inner side
FERTILE FLOWER: pink on inner side of petal

Origin & Breeding History: 'PIIHM-II' was developed by the breeder, Michael Dirr from Bogart, Georgia, USA, a partner of Plant Productions, Inc. in Watkinsville, Georgia, USA. It originated from an open pollinated cross of Hydrangea macrophylla variety 'PIIHM-I' that occurred in 2008 in Watkinsville, Georgia, USA. The resultant seed was planted in January 2009. 'PIIHM-II' was selected later in 2009 for its plant growth habit, flower characteristics and foliage characteristics. Asexual reproduction of 'PIIHM-II' by softwood cuttings was first conducted in 2009, in Watkinsville, Georgia, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'PIIHM-II' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 10 shrubs each of the candidate and reference varieties. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 shrubs or parts of shrubs of the candidate variety 'PIIHM-II' and the reference variety 'Robert' on May 27, 2014, and from the reference variety 'PIIHM-I' on May 30, 2014. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
