Variety used for comparison: 'Ruby Slippers'
Summary: The natural plant height (including the inflorescence) of 'JoAnn' is taller than the natural plant height of 'Ruby Slippers'. The leaf blade of 'JoAnn' is longer than the leaf blade of 'Ruby Slippers'. When newly open, the inner side of the sepal of the sterile flower of 'JoAnn' is light green whereas the inner side of the sepal of the sterile flower of 'Ruby Slippers' is white with yellow green overcolour.

PLANT: non-climbing type, semi-upright to spreading growth habit
STEM: no fasciation, green, no lenticels
LEAF BLADE: lobing present, short tip, rounded base, medium depth of incisions of margin, no variegation, medium green upper side during summer, red (RHS 45A) to brown purple (RHS 183A-B) during autumn, no secondary colour, medium degree of glossiness of upper side, weak blistering
FLOWERING: begins mid-season
INFLORESCENCE: conical shape, moderately conspicuous fertile flowers
STERILE FLOWER: single type, rounded apex, medium degree of overlapping of sepals, incisions of margin absent on all sepals
SEPAL OF STERILE FLOWER (INNER SIDE): light green (RHS N144A) when newly open, white (RHS NN155B) when fully open, no secondary colour
SEPAL OF STERILE FLOWER (OUTER SIDE): brown red (RHS 181C-D) when aged

Origin & Breeding History: 'JoAnn' was discovered and developed by the breeder, Alan Branhagen, an employee of Powell Gardens, Inc., in Kingsville, Missouri, USA. It originated from a chance seedling that was discovered during the summer of 1999. 'JoAnn' was selected in 1999 for its plant size, leaf size, and inflorescence size and colour. 'JoAnn' was first propagated asexually by soft wood cuttings in June 2012, in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'JoAnn' was conducted in an outdoor container trial during the spring and summer of 2016, at BioFlora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 12 shrubs each of the candidate and reference variety. All shrubs were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 14 litre containers on July 15, 2015. The plants were overwintered in an above zero double polyhouse. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on June 21, 2016. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
