Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'MAK20' (Tuff Stuff)

Summary: In autumn, the stem of 'SMNMAKTSR' has absent or few lenticels whereas the stem of 'MAK20' has many lenticels. The leaf blade of 'SMNMAKTSR' is shorter than the leaf blade of 'MAK20'. The petiole of 'SMNMAKTSR' is shorter than the petiole of 'MAK20'. The shape of the base of the leaf blade is rounded for 'SMNMAKTSR' whereas the base of the leaf blade is obtuse for 'MAK20'. The depth of the incisions of the leaf blade margin is shallow for 'SMNMAKTSR' whereas the incisions of the leaf blade margin are of medium depth for 'MAK20'. The width of the sepal of the sterile flower of 'SMNMAKTSR' is narrower than the sepal of the sterile flower of 'MAK20'.

Description:

PLANT: non-climbing type, upright growth habit
STEM: no fasciation, green, absent or few lenticels in autumn, colour of lenticels is dark red

LEAF BLADE: no lobing, elliptic shape, long tip, rounded base, shallow incisions of margin, no variegation, dark green upper side, absent or weak degree of glossiness on upper side, medium to strong blistering

FLOWERING: begins early
INFLORESCENCE: flattened shape, very conspicuous fertile flowers, many fertile flowers; sterile flowers arranged in one, two or more whorls
STERILE FLOWER: semi-double type, very strong degree of overlapping of sepals, incisions of margin present on some sepals
SEPAL OF STERILE FLOWER (INNER SIDE): inner sepal is yellow green (RHS 1C) with green tones (as dark as RHS 141A) when newly open, outer sepal is purple red (RHS 54A) when newly open, purple red (RHS 61C) with blue pink (RHS 63B) tones near purple red (RHS N57D) base when fully open
SEPAL OF STERILE FLOWER (OUTER SIDE): light blue pink (RHS 73C) with brown green (RHS 146A-B) blotches
PETAL OF FERTILE FLOWER: inner side is pink

Origin & Breeding History: 'SMNMAKTSR' was bred and developed by the breeder, Timothy D. Wood, an employee of Spring Meadow Nursery, Inc., in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA. It originated from an open pollinated cross conducted in 2004 between the Hydrangea serrata variety 'Maiko', as the female parent, and an unknown male parent. From the resulting progeny, 'SMNMAKTSR' was selected in June 2007 for its compact plant growth habit, frost resistant flower buds, reblooming ability, lace-cap inflorescence, and inflorescence colour. 'SMNMAKTSR' was first propagated asexually by soft wood cuttings in June 2007, in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SMNMAKTSR' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2017, at BioFlora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 10 shrubs each of the candidate and reference variety. All shrubs were grown from rooted cuttings that were transplanted into 14 litre containers on July 14, 2016. The plants were overwintered in a heated polyhouse kept at temperatures above zero. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or 10 parts of plants of each variety on June 15, 2017. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
