Origin & Breeding History: 'H213902' originated from a cross-pollination conducted by the breeder, Niels Arts of the Hydrangea Breeders Association in De Kwakel, the Netherlands, in April 2008. The cross was made between the female parent designated '01-0215-010' and the male parent designated '08-0004-000', both unpatented proprietary selections of Hydrangea macrophylla. In May 2010, a single unique plant was selected from the progeny in a greenhouse in Glandorf, the Netherlands based on its branching characteristics, vigorous growth, stem strength, size and type of inflorescence, sterile flower colour and post-production longevity. Asexual reproduction of 'H213902' was first conducted in June 2010, in Glandorf, the Netherlands.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'H213902' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2014/0041, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by Groupe d'Étude et de Contrôle des Variétés et des Semences in Brion, France between February 15, 2015 and December 15, 2016. Colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
