Variety Description

Description:

PLANT: non-climbing type, upright growth habit, short to medium height

STEM: no fasciation, green, many lenticels in autumn, red lenticels

LEAF BLADE: very short to short, narrow, no lobing, circular, short tip, rounded base, shallow incisions, no variegation, purple, no secondary colour, absent or weak glossiness of upper side, medium degree of blistering

INFLORESCENCE: flattened, very short, small diameter, very conspicuous fertile flowers, sterile flowers arranged in a whorl, flowers early to mid-season
CALYX: very small to small diameter
STERILE FLOWER: single type
SEPALS OF STERILE FLOWER: strong degree of overlapping, incisions along margin on all sepals, when fully opened medium blue pink (RHS 64D), no secondary colour
PETALS OF FERTILE FLOWER: pink

Origin & Breeding History: 'JPD01' originated from a cross pollination conducted by the breeder Jean-Paul Davasse, in Angers, France in June 2013. The cross was made between Hydrangea macrophylla 'Julisa' (female) and Hydrangea serrata 'MAK20' (male). 'JPD01' was selected in May 2014 in Sainte Gemmes sur Loire, France based on stem strength, length of flowering, flower and foliage colour. 'JPD01' was first asexually propagated by cuttings in July 2014 in Sainte Gemmes sur Loire, France.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'JPD01' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 20190264, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by Groupe d'Étude et de Contrôle des Variétés et des Semences in Brion, France between February 15, 2020 and December 15, 2021. Colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
