Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Dark Angel'

Summary: In autumn, the stem of ‘Jong 02' has a medium number of lenticels while the stem of ‘Dark Angel' has absent or few. The leaf blade of ‘Jong 02' is short to medium length while that of ‘Dark Angel' is medium to long. The inflorescence of ‘Jong 02' has a small to medium diameter while that of ‘Dark Angel' has a medium to large diameter. The diameter of the calyx of the sterile flower of ‘Jong 02' is large while that of ‘Dark Angel' is very large.

Description:

PLANT: non-climbing type, upright growth habit, short, begins flowering mid-season

STEM: no fasciation, green, medium number of black lenticels

PETIOLE: green
LEAF BLADE: short to medium length, medium width, no lobing, circular shape, short tip, rounded base, deep margin incisions, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, no variegation, purple, no secondary colour, medium degree of glossiness of upper side, medium degree of blistering

INFLORESCENCE: flattened shape, very short to short, small to medium diameter, strong conspicuousness of fertile flowers, sterile flowers arranged in one whorl, medium density of sterile flowers
STERILE FLOWER: single type, large diameter of calyx, strong degree of overlapping of sepals
SEPALS OF STERILE FLOWER: margin incisions present on some sepals, inner side dark purple red (RHS 53A) when mature, red secondary colour distributed in a diffuse pattern on inner side
PETAL OF FERTILE FLOWER: purple

Origin & Breeding History: 'Jong 02' originated from a controlled cross that occurred between the female parent variety ‘Dark Angel' and the male parent, an unnamed proprietary seedling designated '10-014-02' on May 30, 2015 in Rijsenhout, Netherlands. In June of 2017, ‘Jong 02' was selected as a single plant from the resulting progeny based on its compact plant growth habit, strength, stem strength, foliage colour, inflorescence shape and sterile flower colour. Asexual reproduction of ‘Jong 02' was first conducted by softwood cuttings in August of 2017 in Boskoop, Netherlands.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of ‘Jong 02' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 20201683, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by Groupe d'Étude et de Contrôle des Variétés et des Semences in Brion, France between February 15, 2021 and December 15, 2022. Colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
