Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Limelight'

Summary: The plants of ‘Pan1782hydr' are shorter than those of ‘Limelight'. The stem of ‘Pan1782hydr' has few to a medium number of small lenticels while the stem of ‘Limelight' has medium to many medium sized lenticels. The leaf blade of ‘Pan1782hydr' is larger than that of ‘Limelight'. The leaf blade tip of ‘Pan1782hydr' is short to medium length while that of ‘Limelight' is medium to long. When newly opened, the sepal of the calyx of the sterile flower of ‘Pan1782hydr' is white while that of ‘Limelight' is light yellow. When aged, the sepal of the calyx of the sterile flower of ‘Pan1782hydr' is white while that of ‘Limelight' is light yellow. The inflorescence of ‘Pan1782hydr' has a pink or red colour at aging on the entire inflorescence while that of ‘Limelight' has none.

PLANT: non-climbing type, upright growth habit, taller than broad

STEM: no fasciation, brown, few to medium number of small whitish (tan) lenticels, very strong

PETIOLE: green and reddish
LEAF BLADE: no lobing, ovate shape, short to medium length tip, obtuse base, very shallow margin incisions, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, no variegation, medium green, no secondary colour, absent or weak glossiness of upper side, medium degree of rugosity, flat in cross-section

INFLORESCENCE: conical shape, inconspicuous or slightly conspicuous fertile flowers, medium to dense sterile flowers, pink or red colour at aging on entire inflorescence, aged flowers medium blue pink (RHS 62A) to medium purple red (as dark as RHS 60D)
STERILE FLOWER: four and five sepals
SEPALS OF STERILE FLOWER: semi-erect attitude, rounded apex, absent or weak rugosity, flat in cross-section, weak overlapping, absent or weak undulation, margin incisions absent on all sepals, white (RHS 155C) when newly opened, white (RHS NN155A) when fully opened, no secondary colour

Origin & Breeding History: ‘Pan1782hydr' originated as a discovery resulting from a controlled mutation using gamma radiation of the parent variety ‘DVP PINKY' in West Grove, Pennsylvania, USA in 2017. In June 2017, the new variety was selected in West Grove, Pennsylvania based on its compact growth habit, stem strength, flowering time and colour development. Asexual reproduction of ‘Pan1782hydr' was first conducted by softwood cuttings in July 2017 in West Grove, Pennsylvania, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘Pan1782hydr' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2024 at BioFlora, Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 10 shrubs each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 13.6 litre containers in the early spring of 2024. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety on August 15, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
