The new variety was selected from the resulting progeny in the summer of 2009, based on its growth habit, foliage colour, attractive and numerous flower production, and production characteristics. Asexual reproduction by softwood cuttings was first conducted in July 2009 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SMHKBF' was conducted as an outdoor container trial during the summer of 2015 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 plants of the candidate variety and 9 plants of the reference variety. All plants were grown from liners and planted into 13.2 litre containers on July 14, 2013. Observations and measured characteristics were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of the candidate variety, and from 9 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of the reference variety on July 8, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
