Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Pink Panther'

Summary: 'Red Fortune' produces a bigger plant than 'Pink Panther'. The stem and leaves of 'Red Fortune' are a lighter green colour than 'Pink Panther'. 'Red Fortune' has no anthocyanin colouration present in the stem or petiole while there is in 'Pink Panther'. 'Red Fortune' has a longer, and narrower leaf blade with a different shaped base than 'Pink Panther'. 'Red Fortune' has a more compact inflorescence than 'Pink Panther'. The flower colour of 'Red Fortune' is pink while it is more of a blue pink for 'Pink Panther'. 'Red Fortune' has longer florets than 'Pink Panther'.

Description:

'Red Fortune' is a perennial that has an upright bushy growth habit, with a medium to dense degree of branching. It is propagated vegetatively. The stem is medium green in colour, medium in thickness, square in shape with no anthocyanin colouration. The stem has no glaucosity and sparse to medium pubescence. The leaf is a simple type arranged oppositely . The leaf is lanceolate in shape with a acute shaped apex, and an obtuse shaped base. The leaf blade margin is crenate to serrate. The upper side of the leaf is medium green in colour with no variegation, or glaucosity and medium pubescence. The lower side of the leaf blade is medium green in colour with sparse to medium pubescence. There is a petiole present that has no anthocyanin colouration.

'Red Fortune' flowers continuously for a moderate to long amount of time. The inflorescence spike is found both axillary and terminally with an erect attitude. The corolla shape is bilabiate.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Red Fortune' was selected in 1996 by the breeder at Boskoop, The Netherlands from a seed bed of Agastache mexicana seedlings that were developed from various crosses of unnamed Agastache seedling selections. Selection criteria was its purple red flower colour, and its large inflorescence size.

Tests & Trials: Were conducted in the summer of 2002 at Oxford Station, Ontario. Trials consisted of ten plants of each variety field grown, where plants within the row were approximately 0.4 metres apart and the rows being 1.0 metre apart. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements unless otherwise indicated.
