Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Balceblali' (Celebrette Lavender)
Summary: 'Kialdan' which produces smaller, more compact plants than 'Balceblali'. 'Kialdan' has no anthocyanin colouration in the stems or petioles of the plants, whereas there is weak anthocyanin in 'Balceblali'. The leaves of 'Kialdan' are slightly smaller than those of the reference variety. Although the two varieties have the same flower colour on the upper side of the petals, the flowers of 'Kialdan' are larger in diameter and have a darker colour on the lower side of the petals.
Description:
'Kialdan' is a New Guinea Impatiens variety with no anthocyanin colouration in the upper third of the shoot. The leaf blade has no anthocyanin colouration and no markings on the upper surface. The upper side of the leaf is dark green in colour. The lower side of the leaf is green with no anthocyanin colouration between the veins and no anthocyanin on the midrib and veins of the lower side. The petiole has no anthocyanin colouration on the upper side.
'Kialdan' has single flowers with one colour only. The flowers are purplish pink and there is a small, white eye zone. The incision of the lower petal is medium in depth. The pedicel and the flower spur have no anthocyanin colouration. The spur is very strongly curved.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Kialdan' was discovered by the breeder on the premises of InnovaPlant/Kientzler in Gensingen, Germany, in April 1999. The variety is the product of a planned breeding program. The objective of the breeding program was to improve the colour and characteristics of the existing variety 'Kitoga'.
Tests & Trials: 'Kialdan' was tested at Variety Rights Management, Oxford Station, Ontario during the spring/summer of 2004. Each variety was grown outdoors in 10cm pots which were spaced in flats on 12.5cm centres. All colour determinations were made using the 1995 RHS Colour Chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
