Variety used for comparison: 'Tilip II' (Tioga Light Pink Improved)

Summary: The lower side of the leaf blade between the veins is green and red for 'Boddblapp' while it is only green for 'Tilip II'. 'Boddblapp' has shorter petioles and longer pedicels than 'Tilip II'. The flower colour for 'Boddblapp' is light pink with darker pink secondary colour at the base of the petals while for 'Tilip II', it is light blue pink with darker blue pink secondary colour at the base of all petals.

Description:

'Boddblapp' is a double flower Impatiens variety with absent to very weak anthocyanin colouration on the upper third of the shoot. The leaves have a small to medium length to width ratio. The upper side of the leaf blade is dark green with no variegation and absent to very weak anthocyanin. The lower side of the leaf blade between the veins is red and green. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the lower side of the leaf blade between the veins is weak. The mid-rib and veins on the lower side of the leaf blade have absent to very weak anthocyanin. The petiole is short with absent to very weak anthocyanin on the upper side.

The flowers of 'Boddblapp' are light pink on the upper side with darker pink secondary colour at the base of the petals. The lower side of the petals is also light pink. The flowers have no eye zone. Anthocyanin colouration of the pedicel is very weak. The flower spur has a moderate curvature and very weak anthocyanin.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Boddblapp' was developed from an Impatiens walleriana Hook. f. breeding program conducted at John Bodger & Sons Company greenhouses in Lompoc, California, U.S.A. The goal for this breeding program was to produce new, compact Impatiens cultivars with fully double flowers, excellent branching, and attractive flower and foliage colours. 'Boddblapp' originated from a cross made in 1999 between an unnamed, semi-double seedling selection whose parentage was 'Carousel White' x 'Tempo Pink' and the variety 'Carousel White'. 'Boddblapp' was selected later in 1999.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Boddblapp' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2005 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants of each variety. The plants were grown in 10 cm pots spaced 12.5 cm apart. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
