Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Fisnics Scarlet' (Sonic Scarlet) and 'KIE01019' (Painted Paradise Orange Improved)

Summary: 'KIE01997' has a shorter plant height than the reference varieties. 'KIE01997' has variegated leaves while 'Fisnics Scarlet' has no variegation. The leaves of 'KIE01997' have weak to medium anthocyanin between the veins on the lower side while the leaves of 'Fisnics Scarlet' are green between the veins. 'KIE01997' has strong anthocyanin colouration on the veins and midrib on the lower side of the leaf while 'Fisnics Scarlet' has weak anthocyanin on the midrib and no anthocyanin on the veins. 'KIE01997' differs slightly in flower colour from the reference varieties. 'KIE01997' has a shorter pedicel than the reference varieties.

Description:

'KIE01997' is a New Guinea Impatiens variety with medium to strong anthocyanin colouration on the upper third of the shoot. The leaf has a medium length to width ratio and is variegated. The main colour of the upper side of the leaf blade is dark green and the secondary colour is yellow with red. There is medium to strong anthocyanin on the midrib and veins on the upper side of the leaf. The lower side of the leaf is red in colour between the veins. The lower side of the leaf blade has strong anthocyanin on the midrib and veins. The petiole is medium to long in length and has medium to strong anthocyanin on the upper side.

'KIE01997' has single red flowers with a small to medium sized pink eye zone. The incision on the lower petal is deep in depth and the lower petal is medium in length. The upper petal is narrow to medium in width. The pedicel and spur have medium to strong anthocyanin and the spur has a medium curvature.

Origin & Breeding History: 'KIE01997' was the result of a controlled cross, made in Gensingen, Germany. The variety was selected in 2001 for its large red flowers and variegated foliage.

Tests & Trials: 'KIE01997' was tested in a greenhouse during the spring and summer of 2004, in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included 15 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were planted into 6cm cells in week 19 and transplanted into 15cm pots in week 25. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on August 5, 2004. Colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
