Varieties used for comparison: 'BFP-605' (Celebration Orange) and 'Visinfscar' (Infinity Scarlet)

Summary: 'KIE00600' has a shorter plant height than 'Visinfscar' and a narrower plant width than the reference varieties. 'KIE00600' has a wider leaf width than 'Visinfscar'. 'KIE00600' has stronger anthocyanin on the midrib on the upper side of the leaf blade than 'BFP-605'. 'KIE00600' has a larger flower diameter than 'BFP-605'. 'KIE00600' has stronger anthocyanin on the pedicel and a weaker curvature of the spur than 'BFP-605'.

Description:

'KIE00600' is a New Guinea Impatiens variety with strong anthocyanin colouration on the upper third of the shoot. The leaf has a medium length to width ratio and is not variegated. The main colour of the upper side of the leaf blade is medium green. There is medium to strong anthocyanin on the midrib on the upper side of the leaf. The lower side of the leaf is green in colour between the veins. The lower side of the leaf blade has strong anthocyanin on the midrib and veins. The petiole is short to medium in length and has strong anthocyanin on the upper side.

'KIE00600' has single red flowers with a small pink eye zone. The incision on the lower petal is medium to deep in depth and the lower petal is medium in length. The upper petal is narrow to medium in width. The pedicel and spur have strong anthocyanin and the spur has a weak curvature.

Origin & Breeding History: 'KIE00600' was the result of a controlled cross, made in Gensingen, Germany. The variety was selected in 1998 for its large bright red flowers and vigorous habit.

Tests & Trials: 'KIE00600' was tested in a greenhouse during the spring and summer of 2004, in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included 15 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were planted into 6cm cells in week 19 and transplanted into 15cm pots in week 25. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on August 5, 2004. Colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
