Variety used for comparison: 'BFP-865' (Celebrette Orchid)

Summary: 'KIE01818' has a narrower leaf width and shorter petiole than 'BFP-865'. 'KIE01818' has stronger anthocyanin on the midrib on the upper side of the leaf than 'BFP-865'. 'KIE01818' has stronger anthocyanin on the veins on the lower side of the leaf than 'BFP-865'. 'KIE01818' has a darker purple flower colour and a longer pedicel than 'BFP-865'.

Description:

'KIE01818' is a New Guinea Impatiens variety with strong anthocyanin colouration on the upper third of the shoot. The leaf has a medium length to width ratio and is not variegated. The main colour of the upper side of the leaf blade is medium green. There is medium to strong anthocyanin on the midrib on the upper side of the leaf. The lower side of the leaf is green in colour between the veins. The lower side of the leaf blade has very strong anthocyanin on the midrib and on the veins. The petiole is short to medium in length and has strong anthocyanin on the upper side.

'KIE01818' has single purple flowers with a medium sized white and red eye zone. The incision on the lower petal is medium to deep and the lower petal is medium in length. The upper petal is medium in width. The pedicel and spur have strong anthocyanin and the spur has a medium curvature.

Origin & Breeding History: 'KIE01818' was the result of a controlled cross, made in Gensingen, Germany in 2001. The variety was selected for its large purple flower colour and vigorous plant habit.

Tests & Trials: 'KIE01818' was tested in a greenhouse during the spring and summer of 2004, in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included 15 plants of the candidate and reference variety. Rooted cuttings were planted into 6cm cells in week 19 and transplanted into 15cm pots in week 25. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on August 9, 2004. Colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
