Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Balfiepuna' (Fiesta Purple Pinata)

Summary: 'Balolepurp' has no anthocyanin colouration in the shoot while 'Balfiepuna' has weak to medium anthocyanin. 'Balolepurp' has medium green leaves while 'Balfiepuna' has dark green leaves. 'Balolepurp' has green on the lower side of the leaf blade while 'Balfiepuna' has red and green on the lower side. 'Balolepurp' has a smaller flower diameter than 'Balfiepuna'. 'Balolepurp' has no anthocyanin in the pedicel while 'Balfiepuna' has weak anthocyanin. 'Balolepurp' has a weaker curvature of the spur than 'Balfiepuna'.

Description:

'Balolepurp' is a double impatiens variety. The shoot has no anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade has no variegation and is medium green in colour on the upper side with no anthocyanin colouration. The lower side of the leaf blade is green in colour. The midrib and veins on the lower side have no anthocyanin colouration. The petiole has no anthocyanin.

The double flowers are red purple in colour (RHS N74A) with no secondary colour. The lower side of the petal is blue pink in colour (RHS 72D). The pedicel has no anthocyanin colouration and the spur has weak anthocyanin. The flower spur has weak curvature.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Balolepurp' originated from a hybridization made in a controlled breeding program during April 2000, at Elburn, Illinois, USA. The female parent was a proprietary breeding selection designated 3177-1-1-2, characterized by its small, single, salmon coloured flowers. The male parent was a proprietary selection designated 12865-2, characterized by its small flowers and dark green foliage. The initial selection was made in September 2001 and asexual propagation has been conducted through the use of vegetative cuttings.

Tests & Trials: 'Balolepurp' was tested in a polyhouse during the spring of 2005, in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001. Measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
