Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Fanfare Orange' and 'Misato FG2'
Summary: 'Misato FG1' has a taller wider plant than 'Misato FG2'. The leaf of 'Misato FG1' is longer than 'Fanfare Orange' and 'Misato FG2'. 'Misato FG1' has a green and red colour between the veins on the lower side of the leaf while it is only green between the veins for 'Fanfare Orange' and 'Misato FG2'. The petiole, pedicel and the veins on the lower side of the leaf of 'Misato FG1' have anthocyanin colouration while there is none in 'Fanfare Orange' and 'Misato FG2'. 'Misato FG1' has a longer petiole than 'Fanfare Orange' and 'Misato FG2'. The flower petal colour of the upper side in 'Misato FG1' is dark purple-red while it is red in 'Fanfare Orange' and 'Misato FG2'. 'Misato FG1' has a lower side flower petal colour that is red while it is orange-brown in 'Fanfare Orange' and 'Misato FG2'. The flower spur of 'Misato FG1' has a weaker curvature than the reference varieties and stronger anthocyanin colouration than 'Fanfare Orange'.
Description:
'Misato FG1' is a vegetatively propagated impatiens variety that has very weak to weak anthocyanin colouration on the upper third of the shoot. The leaf length to width ratio is moderate. The leaf has no variegation. The upper side of the leaf blade is dark green with no anthocyanin present. The lower side of the leaf blade has red and green colours between the veins. The midrib and veins on the lower side of the leaf blade have strong anthocyanin colouration. The petiole is long and has medium anthocyanin coluration on the upper side.
'Misato FG1' has a single type flower. The upper side of the flower petal is a dark purple-red colour while the lower side is red in colour. The flower has a small eye zone that is a pink orange colour. The lower flower petal has a medium length and shallow incisions. The upper flower petal is medium in width while the lateral flower petals are narrow to medium in width. The flower pedicel has weak anthocyanin colouration. The flower spur has a weak degree of curavture and medium to strong anthocyanin colouration.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Misato FG1' is the result of breeding beginning in 1998 of two proprietary breeding lines. A selection was made in an open field trial in Misato, Japan during the summer of 2004 from a population of plants created in 2002. A single plant was selected based on its red flower colour, tolerance to heat and cold, vigorous rooting, mounding growth habit and overall plant vigour.
Tests & Trials: Test and trials were conducted in a polyhouse in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2005. 15 plants of each variety were individually grown in 10cm pots spaced in flats about 12.5 cm apart.
