Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Visinfblla' (Infinity Blushing Lilac)

Summary: The pedicel of 'KIRORUF237' is shorter than that of 'Visinfblla'. The secondary colour on the inner side of the corolla of 'KIRORUF237' is absent while that of 'Visinfblla' is red along the midrib and margin of each petal. The eye zone of the corolla of 'KIRORUF237' is dark purple red while that of 'Visinfblla' is light blue pink with a dark pink red blush. The spur of 'KIRORUF237' is either weakly curved or has a medium degree of curvature whereas the spur of 'Visinfblla' is strongly curved.

SHOOT (UPPER PART): strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration

PETIOLE (UPPER SIDE): strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): no marking, strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
LEAF BLADE (LOWER SIDE): strong intensity of red between veins, red (almost purple) veins

PEDICEL: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER: single type
COROLLA (INNER SIDE): blue pink (RHS N74C-D) with purple (RHS N74A-B) along midrib
EYE ZONE: very small, dark purple red (redder than RHS 60A)
LOWER PETAL: medium depth incision
SPUR: some weakly curved and some with a medium degree of curvature

Origin & Breeding History: 'KIRORUF237' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Mr. Ludwig Kientzler, in Gensingen, Germany. The cross was made between the female parent designated '09-311' and the male parent designated '09-175' in November 2010. In April 2011, 'KIRORUF237' was selected from the resulting progeny based on its compact growth habit, good branching, large flower size and wavy flower petals in Gensingen, Germany. It was first propagated by unrooted cuttings in May 2011 in Gensingen, Germany.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'KIRORUF237' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2015 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on May 11, 2015. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 22, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
