Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Shamrock'

Summary: The plants of 'SMNIGAB17' are taller than those of 'Shamrock'. The degree of branching of plants of 'SMNIGAB17' is high whereas it is medium for 'Shamrock'. The leaf blade of 'SMNIGAB17' is smaller than that of 'Shamrock'. When newly opened, the upper side of the leaf blade of 'SMNIGAB17' is dark green with medium brown to brown purple tones along the margin and a strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration while the leaf blade of 'Shamrock' is light green with an absent to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration.

Origin & Breeding History: 'SMNIGAB17' originated from an open pollinated cross made between the female parent 'UMASS' and an unknown male parent by the breeder, Timothy Wood, an employee of Spring Meadow Nursery, Inc. in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA, in May 2007. Seedlings were selected in June 2010 based on their plant growth habit, plant hardiness, foliage colour and foliage size. 'SMNIGAB17' was first propagated vegetatively by semi-hardwood cuttings in June 2010 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SMNIGAB17' was conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the spring and summer of 2016 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 12 shrubs each of the candidate and reference variety. All shrubs were grown from 5.7 cm liners and planted into 7.6 liter containers on July 16, 2015. Plants were overwintered in an above-zero polyhouse. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 10, 2016 and flower characteristics were observed on April 22, 2016. All colour determinations were made using the 2010 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
