The new variety was selected as a single plant from the resulting progeny in 2010 based on plant growth habit, foliage colour and appearance and sex.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SMNIGLA' was conducted in irrigated containers outdoors during the summer of 2023 and 2024 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 12 shrubs each of the candidate variety and reference variety. All shrubs were grown from 11.4 cm liners planted into 7.6 litre pots in the summer of 2023. Plants were overwintered in a polyhouse. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on September 14, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on Student's t-tests.
