Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'INJAMSASKY' (Safari Sky)

Summary: The plants of ‘ja1950-008' have a semi-erect growth habit whereas the plants of ‘INJAMSASKY' have an erect growth habit. The shoot internode length of ‘ja1950-008' is shorter than that of ‘INJAMSASKY'. The leaf blade of ‘ja1950-008' is wider than the leaf blade of ‘INJAMSASKY'. The flower of ‘ja1950-008' has a larger diameter than that of ‘INJAMSASKY'. The inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘ja1950-008' is medium violet whereas that of ‘INJAMSASKY' is medium violet to light violet.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety ‘ja1950-008' originated from a controlled cross conducted in Heidesheim, Germany in the summer of 2018. The cross was made between the female parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘Ja184-7', and the male parent ‘Summer Dream Violet Eye'. ‘ja1950-008' was selected as a single flowering plant in the summer of 2019 based on growth , branch density, flower colour, time and type of flowering. Asexual reproduction of ‘ja1950-008' was first conducted by vegetative cuttings in the summer of 2019 in Gensingen, Germany.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘ja1950-008' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2024 at BioFlora, Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 11, 2024. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on May 18, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
