Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Goldstrike'

Summary: 'Ridge' has absent or very weak anthocyanin in the leaf while 'Goldstrike' has medium anthocyanin. 'Ridge' differs slightly in flower colour from 'Goldstrike'.

Description:

'Ridge' has a medium plant height and broad to very broad plant width. The leaves are long and medium to broad. The leaf shape is ovate. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium to dark green and the lower side is medium green. The leaf has absent to very weak anthocyanin. In cross section, the leaf is concave and there is no twisting along the longitudinal axis. The leaf thickness is medium. The leaf margin has shallow to medium deep, bicrenate incisions. The leaf apex is round and the attitude of the apex is straight.

'Ridge' begins flowering very early to early and produces many flowering shoots. It belongs to the nine (9) week response group. There are medium to many lateral shoots of the first order. The highest cluster is medium in width and has many flowers. The florets are medium in diameter and the corolla lobes are medium in length and width. The upper side of the corolla lobe is yellow-orange (RHS 17C) and the lower side is light yellow (RHS 15D). The anthers are not prominent.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Ridge' originated from a hybridization made in a controlled breeding program in August 1996 in The Netherlands. The female parent was a kalanchoe variety designated 95114-2 and the male parent was a variety designated 94036. The initial selection was made in June 1997 and asexual propagation has been conducted through the use of vegetative cuttings.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, CPVO application number 1999/0168, grant number 5782, purchased from the CPVO, Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Hannover, Germany in 1999. All colour characteristics were determined using the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart, 1986 edition.
